Our brilliant programme of whole-class instrumental teaching, offered free of charge to all year 3 students in Flintshire, reaches around 1600 children every year.
We aim to give children the opportunity to learn an instrument in a fun and relaxed environment, whilst also building skills and confidence through singing, musical games and performances.
The programme supports the delivery of the curriculum, providing an inspirational starting point for pupils’ musical journeys. The sessions are co-delivered with a Theatr Clwyd Music Associate working alongside school staff, providing a valuable opportunity for classroom practitioners to develop their own confidence delivering music activities in the broader curriculum.
Many of our First Experience teachers use Charanga online resources. Charanga has also been made available through Wales National Music Service free of charge to all schools.
First Experiences 2025-2026
All primary schools and special schools will have 10 weekly sessions over one term lasting up to an hour. This will include an intro session at the start of the project. In addition to the 10 sessions, all schools are invited to a final performance at either Williams Aston Hall or Theatr Clwyd.
Schools will be notified in which term they will be doing First Experiences and allocated instruments. We will be in contact directly to schedule the sessions.
In addition to your free term of sessions, you can buy in First Experiences for one or both additional terms.
What we ask for from schools hosting First Experiences sessions:
- A class teacher or appropriate Teaching Assistant to co-deliver sessions alongside our Music Associate

- Relevant details about any pupils with additional learning needs and appropriate support to ensure they can access the sessions
- A suitable space for the session to take place
- Access to a projector/screen and sound system
- Internet access for our teacher
- Storage for the instruments
- Details of any dates when school is closed or pupils are available as far in advance as possible
- Support with continuation and signposting of further musical opportunities
